This short module explores the critical importance of gut health. In the last ten years, more has been discovered about the impact of gut health and the inhabitants that dwell within it on their human host than has been known about them in the last 50 years.

The gastrointestinal microbiota is quickly being recognised as a vital player in both health and disease. A well-balanced microbial community within the gut is known to confer many health benefits on the host, whilst many common gastrointestinal disorders are associated with an unhealthy gut.

Gut microbial health has been linked to inflammatory conditions ranging from mental health disorders such as anxiety and depression, to autoimmune conditions, osteoporosis and inflammatory skin conditions, to name only a few.

This module identifies and describes the common clinical presentations of some conditions that are linked to gastrointestinal system dysfunction. These include common gastrointestinal disorders as well as a brief look at the link to skin conditions such as Acne, Rosacea, Eczema, Perioral Dermatitis and Psoriasis that will then be explored further in the stand alone Inflammatory Skin Conditions module.

We will take a look at the role that diet plays as well as common therapies used to manage these gastrointestinal-related conditions.

At the end of this short course there will be a quiz to help further embed the newly acquired knowledge.
